Laser treatment

Laser hair reduction is a noninvasive method of removal of unwanted hair. It can be a good option for those with excess body hair who are looking for a way to effectively reduce or remove hair from various body areas.

The time depends upon the size of the area you are concerned. The bigger the area you would like to be treated, the longer the procedure it takes. Small areas like upper lip, can take as little as a couple of minutes while larger areas such as the chest can take an hour or more. Whole body laser may take as longer as 3-4 hours.

Avoid sunlight exposure as much as possible before the procedure, and always use a sunscreen. The tanned skin makes the contrast between hair and skin less visible and reduces the efficiency of the treatment. Avoid shaving the area 3-4 days before the procedure as recognition of the hair shaft by the technician helps in targeting as many hair follicles as possible. Avoid waxing and other depilatory methods as they pull the hair out of the follicle and leaves no pigmented to be targeted.

The number of laser sessions depend upon the thickness of hair. For normal people 5-6 sessions will be sufficient, but women with coarse hair due to hormonal issues, may take 10-12 sessions to achieve the desired result. Dark skin makes the contrast less visible and may result in more treatment sessions. People with light skin and dark hair, may get away with fewer sessions.

Depending upon the growth cycle, laser should be repeated at 4-6 weeks interval. Diode laser and Nd:Yag laser are the commonest and safest lasers used for hair removal. They all work by targeting the hair pigment also known as melanin. That is why laser gives best results with dark, thick and coarse hair and not with fine hair. This melanin pigment is most abundant in the early growth phase (anaphase) of the hair. Hence, this is the time one should come for a repeat session.

With each session of laser, you may expect 10-20 percent of hair reduction. It typically takes between three and eight sessions for permanent hair loss. After a detailed examination of your area of concern, we can give you a better idea of how many treatment sessions you may need. Also, you will likely need a touch-up session yearly to maintain effect, if the need be.

Swelling, redness, temporary discomfort are the common side effects after laser. Rarely, it may cause burns, scars, blisters, infections, permanent changes in skin color if performed by untrained people using non medical lasers. So carefully choosing a skilled medical professional (plastic surgeon or dermatologist) can greatly reduce these risks.

Yes, laser hair reduction is permanent and the results depend upon the quality and colour of hair and skin and also upon some predisposing factors like hormonal issues as in PCOD.

The recovery time after the procedure is minimal and most patients can return to work as normal directly after. Just as wearing sunscreen before the procedure is important, so is continuing to wear it after the procedure. This will help prevent further irritation.
